Green Runners nominated in the BBC’s Green Sport Awards

We are super excited to announce we have been nominated in the BBC’s Green Sport Awards 2024! We have been nominated for the ‘Grassroots Organisation of the Year’ Award.

The Green Sport Awards, established in 2022, showcase “the athletes, former athletes and organisations working hard to enact and inspire change”. Former winners include Green Runner Innes FitzGerald in the ‘Young Athlete of the Year’ category.

This year’s awards coincide with our very own Race for Change crowdfunding campaign, which seeks to pick up the pace of our impact and enable us to create systemic change right across our sport. You can support the campaign here.

Since 2022, we’ve helped thousands of runners live and run more sustainably. We have also entered into an official partnership with England Athletics to support clubs to be greener. This is just a taste of what we can do; with the right support, we can revolutionise our sport to help take the carbon footprint out of running.

No time to rest

Our co-founders Damian Hall and Darren Evans, alongside Green Runners Laura Briggs and Kate Strong, are set to attend the awards. Reacting to the announcement of our nomination, Damian said: “It is great to be recognised by the BBC. It is an enormous validation of the hard work people do behind the scenes. Of course, we cannot be relevant without our amazing membership, so it’s also great to have their efforts recognised through this nomination.”

Although being nominated for such an award is a fantastic boost for us, it doesn’t mean we can rest on our laurels. Damian added: “There are some inspiring organisations also nominated alongside us. Each of those groups represents hundreds, even thousands, of individuals. Each voice collectively gives us the opportunity to really effect systemic change, which we urgently need.

“Whether we win or not, we cannot slow down our efforts to reduce our impact on the planet. We’ve seen in recent days terrible natural disasters across the world, so it really shows how dire the situation is. Runners can be part of the solution.”

The awards take place on 7 October, so keep your eyes on our social media channels for updates on the night and to hear how we get on!
