Memberships
Your membership directly supports our mission to create a more climate-conscious running world. Here is how your contribution helps:
- Building a stronger community
We are growing our team to offer more resources, tools, and opportunities for members to connect and take action. - Keeping us running
Your support helps cover core costs—like the website, communication tools, admin, and insurance—so we can stay focused on the bigger picture. - Spreading the word
We invest in outreach, from event materials to partnerships, making sure the climate conversation reaches more runners. - Backing campaigns and volunteers
Funds also support grassroots action by helping volunteers with travel, tools, and event logistics.
We want to be honest with you: our original membership fee was simply not covering our costs. As our movement has grown, so have our expenses — from essential platforms like our website and CRM to outreach materials and admin tools.
While we are proud to be a volunteer-led organisation, we now work with a small number of paid freelancers to keep things running smoothly and to better support our amazing volunteers. This step has been vital to ensure we can keep growing and delivering on our mission.
We have also introduced a monthly direct debit to make things more sustainable — for both our cash flow and our small team’s admin load. That said, we know some members prefer to pay annually, and we are actively exploring how to bring that option back.
We are currently unable to accept credit card payments, as the fees are too high for a small non-profit like ours.
Using direct debit allows more of your support to go directly into our work.
Yes. GoCardless uses bank-level encryption and is trusted by major organisations around the world.
You can read more about their security here: GoCardless Security
We prefer monthly direct debit payments, as they help us manage cash flow sustainably.
However, due to popular demand, we have introduced a yearly option.
At the moment, we only offer memberships via direct debit. This helps keep things simple and sustainable for our small, volunteer-run team—and ensures renewals happen automatically each year with minimal admin.
If you would like to gift a membership, the easiest way is to go through the usual sign-up process using the recipient’s name and email address.
You can leave the pledges blank or select the default options—they will be able to log in later and personalise their pledges themselves.
Troubleshooting
“I’m having trouble logging into the website and not receiving a password reset.”
“I think my membership is due for renewal, but I cannot find the email or see where to renew on the website.”
We recently launched a new website with a member dashboard. If you joined before 23 January, your account is not yet connected to this new system — but do not worry. You will be invited to join the updated platform when your membership is due for renewal.
In the meantime, you still have full access to all member benefits, and you will continue receiving our emails and updates as usual. The dashboard is simply a handy new way to keep track of your pledges and access the member store.
If you joined after 23 January and have not received your password reset email:
- Please check your spam or junk folder.
- Still not there? No problem — contact us and we will send you a new link to get you logged in
If you joined before 23 January 2025 and are trying to renew your membership, here’s what to do:
-
Head to: thegreenrunners.com/become-a-member
-
Select “Renewing my membership”
This will guide you through linking your existing membership to our new system.
You will also be prompted to set up a direct debit — just make sure you use the same email address as before, so our system can recognise you and match everything up smoothly.

🇨🇭 Switzerland
At the moment, GoCardless does not support CHF payments.
You can still join us by setting up a payment in Euros (EUR) instead.
💡 Note: If you are using an IBAN from the Eurozone but trying to pay in GBP, the system will not accept it. Payments can only be processed in the domestic currency of your bank account’s country.
When we launched our new website in January, we experienced a temporary issue with the direct debit setup. As a result, some payments were rejected. Affected members should have received an email at the time.
✅ The issue has now been resolved and payments are working as expected.
As part of this update, we have moved away from PayPal. While you may have made a one-off payment via PayPal in the past, there was no direct debit linked to it — which is why you received a new prompt to set one up.
If you did not receive the email, please check your spam folder. You can also set up your direct debit by logging into your member account or using this secure link.
Our system matches payments to memberships using your email address.
If you used a different email when setting up your GoCardless payment, it may not have linked automatically, and you might receive duplicate emails.
To fix this:
- Please email us at [email protected]
- Let us know the email address you used for the payment
We will manually update your records to ensure everything is properly connected.
You may receive duplicate communications in the meantime — feel free to unsubscribe from one if needed.
