Mend before spend: ways to look after your kit

Got a hole in your favourite running tights or a tear in your go-to trainers? Don’t toss them just yet! International Repair Day is the perfect opportunity to show your gear some love.

My rule of thumb? Stitch first, then patch.

  1. Stitch: Pull the torn fabric back together using a strong thread (woolly nylon thread works wonders for stretch fabrics).
  2. Patch: Cover the area with a durable patch to reinforce it.

I personally love using a Pair-Ups kit for patching. Not only is it immensely satisfying to give well-loved kit a second life, but your gear also gains a unique, distinctive look that tells a story.

My Go-To Repair Resources:

  • Pair-Ups: Check out their handy tips on Instagram or explore their products at pairups.co.uk/store.
  • Repair What You Wear: An absolute goldmine on YouTube for all things mending.

What about worn-out soles?

If the uppers of your running shoes are in great shape but the soles have seen better days, don’t buy a new pair; resole them! A growing number of companies now offer dedicated shoe resoling services to keep your favorite trainers on the road longer.

Repairing our kit is better for the planet and kinder to our wallets. Don’t fall for the “500-mile replacement” myth: fix your gear, wear it with pride, and keep it out of the landfill!
